Duri Utara Trials Eco-Leachate Use to Curb Waste Odors

The Duri Utara Urban Village in Tambora, West Jakarta, is trialing the use of eco-leachate (eco lindi) liquid to mitigate odor impacts from the waste depot on Jalan Duri Utara III. After four days of application, the initiative is deemed successful in reducing unpleasant smells in the area surrounding the depot.

We're committed to further perfecting this method

Duri Utara Urban Village Head, Ari Kurnia explained that the utilization of eco-leachate is a follow-up to the sister city partnership between the West Jakarta City administration and Sidoarjo Regency (Central Java), which has successfully implemented eco-leachate spraying to mitigate waste odors.

He detailed that eco-leachate is a mixture of raw leachate, molasses, and a sulfuric acid catalyst derived from battery fluid. This solution functions by neutralizing the harmful bacteria responsible for the foul smells emanating from waste piles.

"We currently have a supply of up to 1,000 liters of eco-leachate," he expressed, Wednesday (6/3).

On the technical side, he noted that his team has been piloting the application of eco-leachate solution at the RW 02 Duri Utara waste transfer station since Saturday (5/30).

Following this, on Tuesday (6/2), PPSU personnel and the West Jakarta Environment Sub-agency, assisted by a shovel loader, emptied the depot to facilitate the next stage of the trial.

"The application of eco-leachate to the refuse piles has proven effective in mitigating odors. We're committed to further perfecting this method to ensure maximum effectiveness," he remarked.

His team currently carries out applications twice a day, specifically during the morning hours and throughout the waste-transfer process, expending around 50 liters of eco-leachate.

According to him, the application of this solution is critical for minimizing refuse odors, especially at transfer stations situated within high-density residential neighborhoods.

"Odor neutralization is an urgent necessity that must be addressed to safeguard public comfort and prevent environmental nuisance," he asserted.

Beyond addressing odor impacts, Ari noted that his team is continuously working to reduce waste at its source through waste bank programs in every neighborhood unit (RW).

This action garnered a positive response from Duri Utara Urban Village Consultative Body (LMK) Chairman, Tamjid.

"Hopefully, the eco-leachate spraying at this depot can effectively minimize odors so that residents can feel truly comfortable," he concluded.
